Matt Shultz (vocals), his brother Brad (guitar) and their friends Daniel Titchenor (bass), Lincoln Parish (guitar) and Jared Champion (drums) have spent the last year tearing back and forth across Britain and America, leaving a trail of hedonistic chaos in their wake. Their debut album (recorded in just ten days with producer Jay Joyce), dropped in June 2008, and has been the basis for sellout tours in the UK as the five kids from Kentucky show the children of Great Britain how it’s done.

“Our name kind of stands for the whole of society”, Matt explains, “the people we all are by nature. Sometimes it feels like there’s a campaign to lock up all the good in the world. You turn on the news and hear ‘Today 26 people got gunned down, and one guy got his head chopped off, and here’s a picture of it’. It’s like there’s no hope. And it’s not just the government or the media who are responsible for that, it’s everywhere. But we want to show that’s not right – you can’t cage the elephant”.

Jonah Koslen to recreate classic MSB CD

by Matt on Mar.15, 2009, under Concert Calendar, Music News, Show Stuff, Updates

I was jazzed to see the news about former Michael Stanley Band singer-songwriter Jonah Koslen who recently announced an April 18th date at The Winchester where he will recreate the classic MSB live album Stagepass with his creatively titled band Stage Pass Now.

Michael Stanley Band - Stagepass

Michael Stanley Band - Stagepass

From the Winchester website:

In October of 1976, Cleveland Rock-n-Roll history was made at the original Agora Theatre. Cleveland’s own Michael Stanley Band recorded the classic, gold, double-live album “Stagepass”.

Jonah Koslen and Stage Pass Now re-create the classic album, “Stagepass”, live and in concert, turned up loud and rocking out exactly the way you remember it.

Re-live it, or Experience it for the first time: “Strike Up the Band,” “Rosewood Bitters,” “Nothing’s Going to Change My Mind,” “Show on the Road,” “Waste a Little Time on Me,” “Midwest Midnight,” and the rest of the hit songs from the acclaimed, live album. Jonah Koslen and Stage Pass Now will be live and in concert at The Winchester. Tickets are $15.00. 9pm.

Michael Stanley will be at the show, but not in the way that you might expect. Stanley shares the following quote:

“I’m as excited as everyone else is to hear Jonah and his band perform the Stagepass album live and in concert. I can’t wait to sit in the audience and have the experience of hearing our classic MSB album in all its rocking glory, this time as his friend and a fan.”

Grab your tickets now for this intimate evening with Koslen and crew, which will very likely be a sellout. Visit The Winchester website for ticket details.

PS – a little birdie told me that this will be a warmup show for a larger show later this year. You don’t want to miss this one!

While we’re on the Koslen tip, check out this cool video of Koslen’s post-MSB project Breathless performing at the Cleveland Agora circa-1979!

The Jellybricks, Rock Band 2, and Rolling Stone

by Matt on Mar.15, 2009, under Music News, Show Stuff, Updates

Here’s a cool story that we shared tonight on the show about The Jellybricks and their music video for “Ruin Us.”  The band created the clip using Rock Band 2, and internet buzz for the video has escalated to a nod from Rolling Stone magazine, who called it “the first truly clever viral music video of 2009.”

Bassist/singer Garrick Chow gave Rolling Stone the lowdown behind the clip:

“As a band, after rehearsals, we sometimes get together and play Rock Band, and I was just noticing the camera angles and the shots that are used, that we can make characters that kind of look like us. There’s these great sets in the game, it just looked really cool.” “Instead of taking cameras out into the Pennsylvania winter trying to figure out a video, we basically spent a week playing the game, capturing it in my computer and trying to edit it all together to make it look like we’re actually playing the song.”
