We’ve been talking a lot about Bob Gatewood in the past few weeks, in addition to playing music from his latest CD, which is called Be Good To Yourself.

Being big fans of the late great power pop musician Will Owsley, we were happy to come across the following note from Bob and it’s a very cool gesture on Bob’s part, so we had to share it here.

Read on…

–

Hello Fans of Will Owsley,

Will’s sister, Lucie Owsley, invited me to write about some of my experiences with Will and some of the recording I did with him. I am happy to do so. I am a musician from the Lake Erie Island town of Put-in-Bay, Ohio. I recorded an album of my songs with Will Owsley in 2001 that I am really proud of, “Finally Home”. We were joined in the studio by some of Will’s friends, all of them Nashville luminaries and session masters, as well as a couple of legendary rock musicians.

A friend sent me a copy of “Owsley” in 1999 or so. It was reminiscent of the music I love, and it was written and performed and recorded so very well, it just knocked me out. I was preparing for my next album at the time, so, one day I was on the phone with my producer, Tom Bukovac, and told him about it. Tom is the guy that the Academy of Country Music has been calling the Best Guitarist of the Year for a few years now, but, I am just happy to call him my old friend. And, I am very lucky that he really likes to record the songs I write.

I Told Tom that I wanted to send him a cd that was just knocking me out by a guy named Will Owsley.

Tom said, “Will Owsley? On Giant Records? He lives here in Nashville and he’s a good friend of mine. I’m playing on his next record and I booked him to play lead guitar for yours.”

Well, imagine what a nice surprise that was.

Will Owsley performed many of what we call “track makers” on that album. There are several examples and one comes to mind right away. It is the intro to a song called “Did We Try”. Will imagined a beautiful sound, then performed a difficult guitar riff to pull it off. It was amazing. The sound was so cool, it was sampled and repeated it a few times during the song. It is a very unique combination of techniques that I have never heard anywhere else.

I can explain in non-musician terms how he did it – I think:

1. Wielding his trusty vintage dot-neck Gibson 335,
2. He played a “12th-fret harmonic G-chord” (imagine an electric harp, but not exactly).
3. One of his guitar pickups was set to “full-on” and one was set to “full-off”.
4. This allowed him to toggle between the two pick ups, like Pete Townsend, to make an “on-off-on-off” effect, in time with the music.
5. While this was going on, he brought the volume up and then down with one foot on a volume pedal.
6. Then, as if there wasn’t enough going on already, he does a different pattern with the other foot on his Wah-Wah pedal!

Who thinks to do THAT? It was just the idea of the moment with Will Owsley. Two hands. Two feet. Brilliant!

You can hear one of the sections in which the sound was used if you click the play button next to “Did We Try”, and you’ll hear what might be described as “landing and taking off”, but I’m not really sure.
Check it out: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/gatewood

While I write this, an idea has occurred to me that might let me return Will’s favor a little.

TO ALL FANS OF WILL OWSLEY:

If you purchase the song, “Did We Try”, as a single or album or cd, 100% of the income from that song (less sales tax) will go to Will Owsley’s Children, right up until Christmas of this year, 2011!!

The recording was made by me, Will, and a bunch of Owsley recording friends. It won all sorts of awards and I believe is very good.
Let me know if you are a fan of Owsley’s when you buy it and I will send it all to the kids until Christmas!

You can find “Did We Try” at all your favorite online stores, but they keep a big chunk of the money, so, please visit: www.shop.bobgatewood.com.

Sincerely,

Bob Gatewood

Diagnosed with two brain tumors stemming from the cancer, Koston and his family are struggling to make ends meet financially while they fight Koston’s illness. Auburn Records president Bill Peters recently released the following statement regarding Koston’s condition, with helpful information on how people can help:

“Jared and his family need financial help immediately”, says Auburn Records president Bill Peters. “Jared has four beautiful children and a wonderful wife by his side. The heavy metal community is always very generous and supportive when it comes to good causes.

”Anything you can contribute to the Koston family during their time of need is greatly appreciated. This family is doing everything they can to keep things going but can’t do it alone. Jared and his wife Michele are both hard working people but had to leave their jobs while they continue to battle this illness. All of the money raised will go directly to Jared and his family to help cover medical and travel expenses. Please take a few minutes to contribute if you are able. No donation is too small. You can make a difference.”

Michele Koston has organized two spaghetti dinner fund raisers at the Stadium Grill in Mentor, Ohio on May 3 from 6-8 p.m. and at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Madison, Ohio on May 24 from 5-8 p.m.

More info from Venomin James:

“Jared’s started radiation therapy, but his doctors have basically said that we should prepare for the worst”, says Venomin James guitarist Joe Fortunato. “I don’t even know where to begin. It has all happened so rapidly that it took us all by surprise. He had been getting chemotherapy, but a bad reaction hospitalized him, which is how they found more going on. Originally, it was only in his shoulder but has now spread to his spleen and brain. It may happen that he doesn’t survive too much longer. We were planning to have a benefit concert for him and for Melanoma charities, but it looks like he may not even be around long enough to see it, let alone play at it. The fundraiser is at a very early stage. I have several bands willing to donate performances. We’re praying he makes it through this okay”.

Additional information, including a statement from Michele Koston with extensive details regarding Jared’s condition can be found here.

With no current income or health insurance, anything that you can do to help will be very much appreciated by the Koston family.

It’s been a busy year for us in the Mystery of Two camp. After releasing a self titled LP on Exit Stencil Recordings we hit the road playing the Midwest and East Coast including this years CMJ fest in NYC. Our travels have found us back in Cleveland prepping new material and working on various video projects, on of which will be debuting over the course of these events.

With the winter settling in the decision to approach Art’s Collinwood about a residency came from not only the desire to play and play often, but also as a reaction to the often draining doldrums of February in Cleveland. As we all know, it’s cold and winter starts to drag on, so having a series of free shows with friends is our attempt to fight the tedium the best we know how, which I suppose one could say is loudly. This is our collective encouragement to have some winter fun. Join us as we make our way toward this first spring of a new decade.

THE ULTIMATE TWO CD/TWO DVD RE-MASTERED EDITION OF SEMINAL RECORDINGS FROM OHIO ART-ROCK PIONEERS AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE Burbank, CA – Electro-art-rock iconoclasts DEVO celebrate their early recorded works [..]

THE ULTIMATE TWO CD/TWO DVD RE-MASTERED EDITION OF SEMINAL RECORDINGS FROM OHIO ART-ROCK PIONEERS AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE

Burbank, CA – Electro-art-rock iconoclasts DEVO celebrate their early recorded works from the Warner Bros. Records vaults with an expanded Ultra Devo-lux, Limited Edition four-disc set of their first and third groundbreaking albums: Q: ARE WE NOT MEN? A: WE ARE DEVO! and FREEDOM OF CHOICE, available online only through www.clubdevo.com this holiday season.

Both albums have been re-mastered from the original analog recordings and housed in DEVO-luxish packages with a plethora of audio and video bonus material including the Live at the Forum, London 2009 concert video. The package also includes an original 7-inch colored vinyl single of “Jocko Homo”/”Mongoloid,” plus an original 18” x 30” foldout poster and 16-page booklet. The DEVO-LUX package will be sold for $49.99. Each order will include a digital audio download delivered upon order. A limited number of orders will also include autographed B/W 8×10 vintage DEVO promo photos from the Warner Bros. Records vaults. These are the definitive versions of the band’s classic works, supremely packaged and loaded with previously unreleased rarities made available for the first time ever.

Just how DEVO-LUX are we talking here? This special collector’s edition contains the complete audio CD of Q: ARE WE NOT MEN? A: WE ARE DEVO! — the Brian Eno-produced album re-mastered from the original analog recordings, plus three previously unreleased demos from the DEVO archives. These ultra-rare recordings were committed to tape by the band between 1975 and 1977, including one track produced by Joe Walsh (Ex-James Gang and future Eagle). Believe it! These early recordings provide a unique view into the primitive early world of DEVO.

The second audio disc is comprised of the complete Devo-produced third album, FREEDOM OF CHOICE, also re-mastered from the original tapes. Bonus tracks include the rare six-track DEV-O LIVE EP, recorded live at the Warfield in San Francisco circa 1980. The package also includes three more previously unreleased demos from the DEVO vaults that were recorded at Modern Music Rehearsal Studio in Hollywood, CA, and the Record Plant in Los Angeles in 1979, and are available now for the first time ever and exclusive to this release only.

The first DVD disc contains the debut album performed live in its entirety from The HMV Forum in London 2009, and includes behind-the-scenes footage and more, exclusive to this release only. The second DVD disc is comprised of four classic DEVO video clips. Little did anyone know what kind of global impact these unique short promotional films would have upon the music world for years to come.

THE ULTRA DEVO-LUX LTD. EDITION PACKAGE will sell out quickly so don’t delay. Act now and achieve total audio and video bliss before it’s too late because as we now truly know, Devolution Is Real!
